Thorpeness Meare is a large artificial boating lake originally inspired by extensive flooding in 1910. Landowner Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, the creator of Thorpeness, is said to have viewed the flooding and announced “let’s keep it, and build a holiday village around it”. The meare is only one metre deep but it covers 64 acres, all dug by hand. Visitors can take out a boat to the many fantasy islands (based on the adventures of Peter Pan), where Arthur Ransome is said to have got his inspiration for Swallows and Amazons.
