The Tolhouse is one of the oldest gaols in the Britain. Medieval, it started life in the 12th century as a merchant's house before being turned into a prison. Today, visitors can wander the rooms and follow in the footsteps of smugglers, witches, pirates, thieves and murderers. They can also listen to their first-hand accounts on an audio guide. Visual displays trace the changing face of crime and punishment from when the gaol opened to the present day.
