After Norfolk, Suffolk has more town signs than any other county in England. This one at Southwold represents the Battle of Sole Bay, fought just off the coast here in 1672. Southwold goes back even further though. The town's charter was granted in the 15th Century and the town seal can be seen at the top of the sign above the ships. The seal shows the town's motto, "Defend Thy Ryght".
