The abbey after which this community is named was founded by King Harold, the last Saxon king of England, and there are still some remains of the original building in place. The best preserved part of the abbey is the 14th Century gatehouse and bridge, still a prominent feature of the local community, overseen by English Hritage. The beautiful environment that surrounds the ruin is a fine place to take a walk and observe the eclectic local wildlife.
