Once a religious retreat and fortress, the 315 foot high Bass Rock stands almost two miles offshore in the Firth of Forth. It is now an important nature reserve and is home to over 100,000 breeding gannets. When the birds are nesting in the summer, the rock is almost completely white. A good view of Bass Rock can be seen from Tantallon Castle, or take a boat trip from North Berwick harbour for a closer look.
