Dean Bridge gracefully crosses the Water of Leith at over 100 feet from the valley floor. Opened in 1831, the new crossing opened access to the booming district in Edinburgh’s New Town. The bridge was engineered by Thomas Telford, a Scottish architect known throughout Britain for his contributions to the road and canal infrastructure in use today. Dean Bridge can be crossed on foot to admire the sweeping views of the surrounding gorge, or admired from underneath via the Water of Leith walkway.
