The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, commonly known as ‘The Fringe’, is the world’s largest arts festival. Beginning in 1947 with only 8 theatre groups, the festival has grown and expanded in popularity, culminating in over 2,000 shows with more than 30,000 performances. The festival runs the entire month of August every year and unusual spaces across the city are transformed into performance venues. Edinburgh virtually doubles in population during this time as the winding cobblestone streets fill with tourists and performers.
