The Parthenon-like structure atop Calton Hill is called the National Monument and was built in 1822 as a memorial to the lives lost in the Napoleonic Wars. It is unclear if it was to be an exact replica of the Parthenon, although there are rumours that money ran out halfway through construction, hence the monument’s nickname as ‘Edinburgh’s Folly’. Complete or incomplete aside, the structure is beautiful day or night as it stands at the centre of the hilltop.
