Perched high on Calton Hill, at the east end of the city centre, sits the monument to Admiral Lord Nelson’s Victory, and death at the battle of Trafalgar on the 21st October 1805. The upturned telescope design was created by Robert Burn and built between 1807 and 1815. In 1853 a time ball was introduced. It is lowered each day as the one o’clock gun is fired from Edinburgh Castle.
