Originally built in the 14th Century, St Helen’s Church in Cockburnspath is a hidden gem, tucked between buildings opposite the village’s mercat cross. The church has been extensively modernised throughout its history, particularly in the 16th Century after the Reformation. Oliver Cromwell’s troops occupied the church after the Battle of Dunbar in 1650, and the building was severely damaged by them. The church visitors see today has an unusual circular tower at its west end and a stone-roofed burial vault at the east.
