The Linlithgow Canal Centre sits by the Linlithgow basin on the Edinburgh & Glasgow Union Canal. Enjoy a barge trip to the Avon Aqueduct, passing through lush countryside en route. The canal has no locks but follows the lie of the land and is known as a contour canal. It opened in 1822, providing a link from the capital to the cross country Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk; the original linking locks disappeared long ago but the canals were rejoined by a boat lift called the Falkirk Wheel.
