The Royal Observatory has sat high atop Blackford Hill overlooking the city of Edinburgh since 1896. It hasn’t always been the city’s official royal observatory; formerly the Playfair Observatory held this honour until the less than suitable site was dismissed. The Blackford site has been well-cared for since its inception and features advanced technology as well as a research centre and a public visitor centre. Visitors are allowed to observe the sky through the telescopes, hold pieces of meteorite, and listen to astronomers discuss the latest discoveries.
