The winding stream called the Water of Leith flows nearly 24 miles from its source in the nearby Pentland Hills into the Shore area of Leith, skirting both the western and northern edges of Edinburgh city centre. 12 miles of the river can be seen via a well-maintained walking path that begins in the outlying suburb of Balerno, passing Murrayfield Stadium and Dean Village in the city before ending in the Shore in Leith. Walking the pathway is free of charge and it is extremely well signposted.
