Avebury is best known as a site of a large stone circle. Older than Stonehenge, the Neolithic monument dates back 5000 years. Just 27 stones have survived into recent times, but it is thought that many more are buried beneath the surface. Those who believe in Paganism and Druidry consider the village to have special significance. A large part of the village is actually set within the monument, allowing unrivalled access and setting it apart as a World Heritage site.
