Known for its many roundabouts, Basingstoke is a market town dating back to 1214. The market day has been held each Wednesday since this date. It is currently a base for large industry such as Sony, Motorola, Shire and Sun Life, making Basingstoke an area of low unemployment. Much has been done in recent years to improve the image of the town, including the building of Festival Place, a major shopping centre. Basingstoke also boasts the Willis Museum, Milestones museum, the Haymarket Theatre and the Anvil.
