Le Forbury Gardens, partie à l'origine de Reading Abbey, ont été créés entre 1856 et 1864. The gardens are dominated by the Maiwand Lion, an 1886 memorial to the dead of the 66th Berkshire Regiment who fell during the battles of Maiwand and Kandahar at the end of the second Afghan War (1878-80). Conçu par George Blackall-Simonds, elle est l'une des plus grandes statues en bronze, à 31 pieds de long. La lecture est à proximité de la prison où Oscar Wilde a été condamné en 1895, écrit La Ballade geôle de Reading en 1898 après sa libération.
