The original stones were laid at this castle between 1284 and 1293, creating a semi-fortified castle and tower house, playing an important part in the political and economic growth of this region. Made from red sandstone, a good portion of the house still remains and the architectural features are notable and interesting. Parliaments were held at the castle on two occasions in 1283 and again in 1285.
