The rather plain monument commemorating the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross, was erected by subscription in 1799. The famous battle took place on 2 February in 1461. The Lancastrians, led by Jasper Tudor fought Edward, Earl of March and the Yorkists in the meadows between the villages of Mortimer’s Cross and Kingsland. It is said that the battle, which lasted from sunrise to sunset, claimed up to 4,000 lives. Edward was crowned King Edward IV later the same year.
