Strutt’s North Mill was the most technologically advanced building when built to William Strutt’s ‘fire-proof’ design in 1804. The museum displays the evolution of cotton spinning from cottage industry to factory system through original and replica machinery. Drop spindle to Crompton’s mule. Our famous ’Brettles’ silk and cotton hosiery collection shows fine examples of chevening (local hand embroidery on stockings) and hand-operated knitting frames, with the ’Derby Rib’ attachment, show how stocking and sock making developed. Strutt’s North Mill is now the only Registered Museum and Tourist Information Point in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Renowned River Gardens and Strutt industrial housing are nearby.
