Built to withstand the Welsh in the twelfth century, Berkeley Castle has a turbulent past. The fortress and the Berkeley family, its lifelong owners, have witnessed countless historical events from the first American Thanksgiving back to the murder of King Edward II by red hot poker. Visitors are met with vivid stories of the past as they skirt round the dungeon, navigate the trip steps and admire Queen Elizabeth I’s bedspread. Outside are beautiful picnic grounds and the village’s Norman church.
