Chancellor Law’s Fountain opened in 1871 and was given to the people of Lichfield by Chancellor James Thomas Law (1790-1876). He was Chancellor of the Diocese and Master of hospital of St John (located nearby). It is believed that the opening ceremony on Thursday 18th May 1871 included local children singing the Old Hundredth Psalm while the Chancellor handed the keys to the Mayor of Lichfield. Unfortunately it no longer runs on a regular basis, but visitors can still enjoy the sculpted ironwork and stone lions, herons and fish decorating the fountain.
