St Michael’s is a fine cruciform church with Norman origins. Exceptional features include a surviving Norman doorway with an ornate carved tympanum and a tiny Saxon sarcophagus thought to be one of the smallest in the country. The beautiful English Chancel was added in the 12th or early 13th century, the tower and font in the 15th century and the north and south transepts in the 19th Century. The church inspired John Barnard’s hymn tune, ‘Guiting Power’.
