At the start of the 19th Century, the Cirencester Lock Up was built to hold criminals in either of its two cells before Cirencester had an established police force. In 1837, it was moved to form part of the new town workhouse, and remains in that position today. Nowadays it has been restored and is open to the public and provides an interesting insight into law and order before there was a police force.
