Cirencester Cottage Hospital began taking in patients in 1875. It could accommodate up to 100 at a time, and did so until 1913, when it closed. The original half-timbered black and white building, completed in 1873, has since been extended. The rear extension was added by Lawson in 1912 and other extensions later in 1931. The hospital was built by the fifth Earl Bathurst in memory of his first wife, Meriel.
