The Derwent Dams on the Derwent, Howden and Ladybower Reservoirs were built to supply water to Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester. The Derwent Reservoir was used during the Second World War by the RAF Dambusters 617 Squadron to practice low flying before its famous bouncing bombs raid on German dams. The small Derwent Dam Museum is housed in the left tower and contains memorabilia and photographs. There are many scenic walks and bike rides on footpaths and cycle tracks in the area.
