Durban House was built in 1896 for the Barber Walker mining company and once served as the wages office for the colliery where D H Lawrences’ father worked. It is a short distance from the birthplace of Lawrence, the famous poet, and in 1998 was fully renovated and opened as a museum dedicated to the life and times of D H Lawrence. There are a variety of ‘talking’ exhibitions on display as well as original texts, manuscripts and court notes relating to the author.
