Edvin Loach Old Church was built in the mid 1000s and originally dedicated to St Giles. It was later re-dedicated to St Mary, probably at the Reformation, and is now in the care of English Heritage. The large lintel stone is thought to be a sacred relic, brought from an ancient hermitage near Southstone Rock. The church comprises an un-aisled nave, a chancel and a tower, which was added in the 16th Century. The herringbone masonry is a feature of Saxon and early Norman churches.
