Erasmus Darwin (1731 – 1802) was an extraordinary man, probably better known as grandfather to Charles Darwin and he made his home in Lichfield, Staffordshire. Erasmus was a scholar, a doctor, a philosopher, an acclaimed poet and botanist. He set up the Lunar Society with Matthew Boulton, Josiah Wedgwood and James Watt, which met to discuss scientific and commercial developments and helped power the industrial revolution. His former house is open to the public Monday to Friday and with a small entrance fee (concessions and season tickets available).
