The earliest part of Goodrich Castle is the keep, begun in the 12th Century, most probably in the time when Richard de Clare was Lord of Goodrich 1148-76. The castle eventually passed to William de Valence who rebuilt its defences and living quarters. The gatehouse is a long vaulted passageway with a portcullis each end. Outside are the remains of a 14th Century barbican and drawbridge. 'Roaring Meg', the only surviving Civil War mortar, has been restored to the castle after 350 years. Goodrich Castle is an English Heritage site.
