The remains of Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester and founder of the first Parliament, are buried here. De Montfort was killed at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. His body was dismembered and decapitated, but what remained was buried within the grounds of Evesham Abbey by the monks. The tomb was a popular site for pilgrims. This stone was brought from his birthplace in France to commemorate the seven hundredth anniversary of his death.
