With its 13th Century tower and adjoining Jacobean mansion, this fortress dominates the thriving ‘book town’ of Hay on Wye. The castle was built in 1200 and is now owned by bibliophile Richard Booth. Maud de Breos, a central character in the Barbara Erskine novel ‘Lady of Hay’, allegedly constructed the keep. Changing hands over the centuries between kings and dukes, Hay Castle has survived fires and near destruction by Owain Glyndwr but today remains a prominent feature of this world-renowned town of books.
