The black and white Market House and Heritage Museum is also Newent’s town hall and is sited in the middle of the town. It was built in 1668 as a butter market, there being a market established here for several centuries before the present hall was erected. Exhibited upstairs is the story of Newent from prehistoric and Roman eras. Included are displays and photographs concerning the town’s coal and iron mining history as well as more modern times.
