This charming Elizabethan mansion is famous for its association with King Charles II who hid here as a fugitive during the Civil War. Visitors are invited to see the bed where he slept and a fascinating exhibition that recreates those turbulent times in England. The National Trust own and operate the property and have recreated the gardens in typical 17th Century style. There is a coach house tearooms serving refreshments and lunches.
