The mound of the motte and bailey castle at Staunton-on-Arrow dates back to the early Norman’s of the 11th Century and is sited behind the church. The Domesday Book of 1086 shows Staunton to be shared between Ralph of Mortimer and Drogo, who held it under Osbern. Today, the motte is most visible, though the area of the bailey can be seen on the south east side. There is a deep outer ditch that was adapted as a mill leat. The motte here has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
