St Peter’s is best known for its gargoyles. Around forty grotesque faces stare down from the outside of the church. It’s said that the faces are caricatures of local residents from 1468, when the present church was built. Apart from donations, such as the brass chandelier in the nave given in 1753, the church has remained largely unchanged since it was built. References to a church of St Peter here go back to 1175.
