Cheltenham’s most ambitions Regency building was completed in 1830 for the then vast sum of £40,000, for Joseph Pitt, when Cheltenham’s golden age as a fashionable spa town was already fading. In 1890, the building was sold to the Borough of Cheltenham for just £5,400, having failed to pay its way. Further decline followed during WWII when dry rot reduced the structure to a crumbling shell. Thankfully, it was rescued and restored and is now Grade I listed. Today’s attractions include exhibitions, concerts and dining. Visitors can even take the waters once thought to cure everything from worms to gout.
