This 12th Century spital gate is all that's left of the Abbey of St Mary, which dominated Cirencester until its dissolution in 1539. The gate's two roundheaded arches, one large, one small, were once entrances to this great Abbey and, today, they still provide pedestrian access to the Abbey Grounds, a popular green area in the town. The gatehouse and cottages alongside the gate were restored in the nineteenth century.
