The history of St Edward’s Church spans nearly a thousand years. Begun in the 12th Century on the site of an earlier Saxon church, it was built over many centuries. Period features include a 14th Century chancel and a 15th Century tower. The 17th Century saw St Edward’s in ruins though, after it had been used to hold Royalist prisoners of war following the Battle of Stow. The church was restored in the 1680s. Attractions include a painting of the Crucifixion by de Craeyer, and, reportedly, the loudest church bells in Gloucestershire.
