This well, and another further down the lane, are where Stow’s water came from until 1871, when a well was bored in the town centre itself. Before that, women, children and horse-drawn carts would have carried water up the hill from here to the town. In the town it cost a farthing a bucket. Although the Well's landscaped gardens are now overgrown, the stone building has been restored and is today Grade II listed.
