The original 13th Century St Ethelbert’s hospital was rebuilt in 1805 as a gothic style building with gardens down to the old castle moat. The ten women it housed had to attend the cathedral for morning and evening services. They were given special capes and hats in which to attend, as well as a designated pew, and each received alms of a loaf of bread each day and a penny each Sunday. Today, the trustees are the Dean and Chapter of Hereford Cathedral.
