The church of St John the Evangelist in Coleford was built in 1880 to replace the original church that stood in the town centre market place where now only the tower remains. The church has an apsidal chancel and the nave is surprisingly lofty. Some of the fittings for the new St John’s came from the old building, including the organ, though the present one is of 1906. Sir Charles Nicholson designed the carved reredos which was placed in the church in 1920 as a war memorial.
