Enter St Mary the Virgin Church in Hartpury through the 14th Century carved oak porch and you’ll encounter plenty of fascinating detail. Two medieval carvings in the roof of the nave depict a Green Man and his scaly companion, but no one is sure who or what it represents. The East window has butterfly tracery, very like that in Gloucester Cathedral and there is a huge chest carved from a single tree trunk. Buried in the churchyard are the parents of the wife of Beatrix Potter’s Tailor of Gloucester.
