Standing on a stone plinth in the porch of St Mary the Virgin Church in Newent is the carved shaft of a free-standing cross, probably 9th Century. The great nave was rebuilt during the 17th Century after it collapsed in 1674, and the tower is 14th Century. Contained in a glass case is an elaborately carved 11th Century stone tablet, used as a burial ‘pillow-stone’ and found with a skeleton during excavations in 1912. The Lady Chapel was a former chantry and contains a 14th Century aumbry.
