The Tudor tower of St Mary the Virgin Church in Upleadon is believed to be unique, being timbered from the base to its height. The half-timbered structure was erected in the early 16th Century and has a ‘wishbone’ type cross bracing. The church’s Saxon East window now forms an arch into the sanctuary. The nave was originally Norman and so too is the 12th Century carved North doorway. Look for the treasured ‘Black Letter Bible’ displayed in a case and printed in 1611.
