On top of the hillside, standing in the confines of a Norman motte and bailey castle is the new church of St Mary at Edvin Loach, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Building began in 1858 in Early English style, with the apse a polygonal shape and the interior uncommonly lofty. An unusual feature is the two great columns behind the rear pews that support the East side of the steeple. A display of two old bells in the church tells of the dramatic recovery six years after their theft.
