St Peter’s Church in the village of Birley is a little out of the way but extremely attractive. Its half-timbered black and white gable juts out over the Perpendicular chapel, and the straight headed windows are another of the chapel’s features. The tower has its original Norman windows, a shingled storey and a pyramid roof. The 12th Century Romanesque font is chalice-shaped and an unusual design of interlaced work around the bowl and arches and crosses around the stem.
