The Butter Market is usually referred to as the Round Market even though it is oval in shape. Built in 1858 and originally an open plan structure on six pillars, the Butter Market replaced an earlier building of 1811.The present structure was built by James Cranston of Birmingham to enable farmers' wives to sell their butter and poultry inside, with walls to keep out the bad weather. Famous for the annual Holly and Mistletoe sales, these events are held on the Tuesdays before Christmas.
