The stonework Bee Shelter in Hartpury is considered by the International Bee Research Association to be a unique historic monument, with no comparable structures anywhere else worldwide. Built by stonemason Paul Tuffley in his ornamental garden in the mid 19th Century, possibly as an exhibition piece, it contains 33 compartments to house straw bee skeps. The bee shelter was rescued in 1968 and later passed to Hartpury Historic Buildings Trust, who restored it as closely as possible to its original form.
