Marking the division between the Dudley and Stourbridge canals, the Black Delph staircase of locks has always been known locally as The Nine Locks, although there are only eight! The locks were rebuilt in 1850 with one fewer lock but the name has always remained the same. Set into a steep hill, the route of The Nine Locks makes a very pleasant canal walk or cycle ride. Halfway up, visitors can see a block of original stables used to house the horses which worked on the canal, and also the former lock-keeper’s cottage.
