Its carved cross modelled on the one at Fécamp, this war memorial was made by Niniam Comper in 1918. It stands at the western end of Cirencester's historic Market Place. Markets have been held here since at least Saxon times and behind the 18th Century façades of the square's north side are much older structures. To the south are later buildings, many Victorian, including the Corn Hall and the King's Head Hotel. Market Place saw the first bloodshed of the English Civil War, when Cromwell's troops attacked Lord Chandos here.
